Lise Mitchell papers, 1838-1936.

This collection consists of personal papers of Lise Mitchell of Warren County, Miss. Included are handwritten correspondence, financial records, a handwritten Civil War-era bound diary of Lise Mitchell, with a twentieth-century typed and edited transcription of its contents by her daughter, Mary Lucy Hamer O'Kelley, genealogical diagrams and notes, forms, photographs, a hand-drawn map, school papers, and newspaper clippings. Photocopies accompany some letters and photographs. The correspondence originated in at least fourteen different states, by more than fifty correspondents, most notably several personal letters from Lise Mitchell's uncle, Jefferson Davis. Other correspondents include her father, Joseph E. Davis; her stepmother, Lucy Bradford Mitchell; and her husband, William D. Hamer.

According to her daughter Mary, Lise Mitchell was also known as Elizibeth, Elise, or Lize, but most frequently Lise. She was also known later in life by her married name, Lise Mitchell Hamer. The diary in the collection was written between July 1862 and March 1867 from Hurricane Plantation. Lise Mitchell's uncle, Jefferson Davis, was the president of the Confederate States of America.
